In the final international golf championship of 2008 four division winners were crowned Tuesday, December 30 at the Canadian Junior Golf Association World Junior Challenge at Ginn Reunion Resort's Legacy Course in Florida.
Zeyu He, Annie Park, Parker Page, and Juan Veloza all led from start to finish in their respective divisions in an event featuring 14 countries.
He, 17, who resides in Bradenton, Fla. but originally hails from China, made it two consecutive World Junior Challenge wins after posting rounds of 72, 71, and 72 for a one-under par 215 total and a five-stroke victory ahead of Rocky Khara of Sebring, Fla.
"I played alright, the greens were rolling nice and I made a lot of putts," said He. "My long game and short irons were very sharp."
Levittown, New York's Annie Park already has two World Junior Challenge titles to her credit at the ripe old age of 13 as she posted a round of 73 for a three-day total of 1-over par 217. Second place finisher Cindy Feng, 12, of Orlando, Fla. carded a division low round of 2-under 70 but could not erase a six-stroke deficit.
"I played very steady, made a lot of pars," said Park. "The wind made it tough but the course was good."
Though the two weren't grouped together, Louisville, Kentucky's Parker Page battled it out with Orange Park, Florida's Joshua Lee during the final round in the Boys 14-16 Division as both junior golfers carded solid rounds of 69. Page's three day total of 216 was three better than Lee.
"It was pretty solid, I hit 16 of 18 greens," acknowledged Page. "Chance (Holden) birdied the first three holes, we both birdied #4, and I pulled away from there."
Competing in the Boys 13 & Under Division, Colombia's Juan Veloza pulled away from the field on the strength of his impressive final round of 71, a division low. "I'm very happy, very excited," exclaimed Veloza, of his seven-stroke victory. "I putted very good. Made some birdies."
Top Canadians in the event included Toronto's Lucas Kim who finished in 5th spot in the Boys 14-16 Division, 13 strokes back of the leader.
James Mills-Holland of New Minas, N.S. grabbed fourth spot in the Boys 17-19 Division with a three-day total of 10-over pasr 226 while Brogan McKinnon of Mississauga, Ont. carded a division low 70 in the Girls Division to move up to a tie for 6th spot.
