The Canadian Junior Golf Association played the role of a spoiler during the final round of the three-day, three nation Triangular Cup at Zebula Golf Estates & Spa in Bela Bela, South Africa today, allowing the host nation win the Cup for the fourth consecutive time.
Competing in singles matches, the six-member Canadian contingent collected 3 points out of a possible 12 allowing South Africa to finish on top in the final standings, 21-19 over the English Golf Union. The CJGA Team Canada contingent finished thid with five points.
Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ontario was victorious in both of his matches to pace Canada on the final day.
Bryan Lichimo of North Vancouver, B.C. earned the third point of the day for CJGA Team Canada as he defeated England's Max Smith 1 Up.
Pendrith was a 5 & 4 winner over South Africa's Calvin Pearson and defeated England's Jonathan Bell 1 Up in his two matches.
The CJGA Team Canada squad gained it's other two points when Calgary's Malo won both of his first round singles matches on Monday.
Members of Team Canada included Pendrith, Mike Reaume, Cameron Davison, Malo, Troy Bumer and Lichimo. who earned the third point of the day for CJGA Team Canada.
"It was an amazing experience for these players to compete against some of the top junior golfers in the world," said John Lawrence, non-playing captain of CJGA Team Canada.
"Though I know the team would have preferred a better result, they will remember this trip for the rest of their lives. Thanks to the South Africa Golf Foundation for their fantastic hospitality and to the English Golf Union for their great sportsmanship and competition."
South Africa remains unbeaten in the event's history having won in 2005, 2006, and 2008. (The tournament was not held in 2007).
