No New Canadians Joining The PGA TOUR In 2009

If Frazar Harrison never wins a tournament on the PGA TOUR---he's already played 300 and has yet to win---it won't be for lack of talent after what he displayed over the past six days regaining his playing privileges at Qualifying School.

With a remarkable round of 13-under par 59 among the six sub-par scores he posted at La Quinta, California, Frazar wound up 32-under par and eight shots clear of the field. The 37-year-old is a veteran of 10 years on the TOUR.

"It means I have a place to go play golf next year. It means I have a place to go try to earn a living," said Frazar. "I came into this week having fallen so far back that I had pretty much lost all my status. I had to play. This week means a lot."

A score of 19 under was needed to earn a PGA TOUR card. Eleven under was the score required to earn fully exempt status on the Nationwide Tour. Seventeen under was the previous lowest score needed to earn a card (2001), while 10 under (2001) was the previous lowest to earn full exempt status on the Nationwide Tour.

Of the 28 players successfully earning PGA TOUR cards, all but seven feature in the Nationwide Tour All-Time Roster. John Huston, Matt Borchert, Troy Kelly, Gary Woodland, and Wil Collins have played a limited number of events on the Nationwide Tour, but not enough to be included on the roster. Derek Fathauer and Y.E. Yang have never played a Nationwide Tour event.

Twelve of the 28 players to earn PGA TOUR cards will be rookies on the PGA TOUR in 2009.

From a Canadian Tour member's perspective, Wil Collins parred the final hole in dramatic fashion at Fall Qualifying to secure a PGA TOUR card for 2009.

The South Dakota native - who shot 65-67 the last two days - pulled his drive deep into the mounds at No. 18 and then wisely layed up for his second shot.

His third stopped 18 feet from the pin and, knowing what was at stake and with nerves of steel, the Canadian Tour member drained the par putt to earn a ticket to the big show on the number.

Troy Kelly, a 2008 Canadian Tour rookie who was inside the number all week, easily advanced with his T-11 finish, a spot he shared with former members Notah Begay III and Jimmy Walker.

"This is really something special," said Kelly, who attended the school with his young daughter. "I have dreamed of being on the PGA TOUR since I first started playing tournaments around here and now it has happened."

Also heading back to the big tour is former member Glen Day (T-9) and the threesome of Ted Purdy, Kent Jones and Jay Williamson who join Wil Collins in a share of eighteenth.

Current and former members earning Nationwide status for 2009 included Kris Cox and Bryce Molder (T-29), Scott Dunlap (T-34), Brian DeCorso (T-40), Dustin Risdon, Michael Bradley and David Branshaw (T-53), Guy Boros and Craig Kanada (T-62), Steve Friesen, Brennan Webb and Jon Mills (T-70), Jim Rutledge (T-87), Adam Bland, David Hearn, Roger Tambellini and Sal Spallone (T-97), Dong Yi (T-107), Erik Justesen and Lee Williamson (T-115), and Kent Eger (159).
