The Global Economy Versus Golf's Popularity

To some the game of golf is just that, a game. However, to thousands of workers employed in the golf industry in Canada this game is facing a challenge no less daunting than any other industry in these financially turbulent times.

Many courses have reported fewer rounds were played in 2008. Whether that's because golfers have found prices too steep or lack of disposable income has altered recreational priorities, the cause is uncertain.

A devalued Canadian dollar and lower gas prices may have come tool late in the season to boost tourism. As a result pro shop sales have not met expectations and a number of developers and architects are re-evaluating projects planned for the future. At least one course is up for sale in BC and more sales are anticipated in a few saturated markets across Canada.

In British Columbia, where the sport has enjoyed bountiful times and seemingly endless expansion, BC Golf News spoke recently with Brian Butters, Executive Director of the PGA of BC about the immediate future of the game and the impact on his Association members.

The next real barometer for measuring golf's interest in BC's Lower Mainland will occur in February 2009 during the annual Vancouver Golf & Travel Show.
