Three Rounds In The 60's Looking Cool In Chile

Christopher Guenther of Germany, the only player to shoot three consecutive sub-par rounds, has a two shot lead heading into Sunday's final of the Sport Francis Open in Santiago, Chile where the Canadian Tour is kicking off the first event of the Tour's 2009 schedule.

After scores of 69, 66 and 67 on the 6,857-yard par 71 layout, Guenther's 205 total is eight under par and two strokes in front of American Daniel Im. Im recorded his second consecutive 67 and is aiming for his third Canadian Tour title since May.

Martin Ureta, with the low round of the day - a five under par 66 - is alone in third spot at 208. First round leader Hugo Leon (69) and Rafael Gomez (71) are just four shots back at 209.

Tied for sixth at 211 are Julio Noguera, Clodomiro Carranza and Raul Fretes with the Canadian duo of Kris Wasylowich (67) and Mike Mezei (72) one shot back at 212.

"I started well with a birdie at the first but then it was a little shaky," said Guenther, who made bogeys at the second and sixth while birdieing the fourth. "I'm not used to the position on a big tournament like this. As we kept playing I made a very good par putt on No. 11 and that really kept my momentum going. From there I played well.

"I made two birdies (14 and 17) and a bogey on the last, which is a really tough hole, especially for me. It's even tough even to look at, so making five there was not that bad. It's a par-four and a half.

The 480-yard par-4 18th had its share of victims with bogeys being the order of the day.

"You never know how it's going to be. It's a very tough hole and it's going to be very decisive. We'll see what happens. I'm going to enjoy it tomorrow, just as I enjoyed it today with all these spectators around," concluded the tournament leader.

Yet, for Daniel Im, the closing hole yielded a gutsy birdie for the 2008 Rookie of the Year.

"I made a huge putt there," he said of his 16-footer. "Luckily for me, Alex (Coe) had a putt right behind me, so I got an assist from his putt.

"I didn't want to shoot myself out of it today. I could have. I had a fine line where it could have been very bad, but I kind of kept myself going and then I calmed down to have a chance to win going into tomorrow."
