For the second time in three years North Vancouver teaching professional Bryn Parry of Seymour Creek has finished first atop the Vancouver Golf Tour's Order of Merit money standings and won an entry into the first stage of the PGA TOUR's Qualifying School later this month in Florida.
Playing Friday at Surrey's Morgan Creek Golf Club, Parry posted a 3-under par 69 to share top honours in the Augusta Resource Corp. VGT Championship with Canadian Tour veteran Matt Daniel of Richmond, BC, each collecting $1,300.
Parry finished the MarketPlace IGA-sponsored Vancouver Golf Tour OOM winning $15,461 through 15 events, more than $3,000 ahead of runner-up Dan Swanson of Vancouver who played in 13 events and won five times. In addition to finishing in the top four positions 12 times during the year, Parry claimed two victories outright, was the top professional in the Vancouver Open---won by amateur Lucas Bogdan---and tied for first in the VGT Championship. Andrew Smeeth of Abbotsford ($9,062) won once and finished the campaign in third place.
Although Parry's Order of Merit position was not in jeopardy, the battle for first in Friday's Tour Championship came down to the wire with four players---Kyle German (Point Roberts GC), Phil Jonas (Hazelmere GC) and Canadian Tour members Oliver Tubb, Vancouver and Andrew Smeeth--- tying for third place at 2-under 70.
Jonas, by the way, is also planning on taking another crack at the PGA TOUR. He captured the VGT's OOM title for 2007 but chose to delay a trip to Q-School in order to concentrate on his flourishing teaching academy duties at Hazelmere. Jonas entered 10 events this season and came in 14th with $2,717.
In 2006 when the Vancouver Golf Tour first offered to pay the entrance fee into the first round of the PGA TOUR Qualifying School Parry was the run-away winner of the Order of Merit. He narrowly missed winning his way onto the PGA TOUR, but did earn a berth on the Nationwide Tour for 2007 and early that season finished second after loosing a playoff in the $500,000 Henrico County Open in Richmond, Virginia. The rest of the season wasn't as spectacular and he wound up T88th on the money list just shy of $70,000, not enough to retain his full status on the TOUR for '08.
This season Bryn and his wife, Deborah, welcomed another new edition to their household and that brought about a change in priorities. Parry elected to share parenting responsibilities and, with the exception of one Naionwide event where he missed the cut, the two-time Canadian PGA Assistant's champion (2005-1995) returned to teaching at Seymour Creek and once again dominated most of the tournaments he entered. throughout the Lower Mainland.
Parry actually played a lot of golf this season, recording victories in both the VGT, the Srixon Tour and a variety of pro-ams, tallying close to the16 wins he collected in his magical 2006 season. He also finished sixth this season at Hazelmere in the Canadian Tour's Greater Vancouver Classic.
Three days after celebrating his 38th birthday Parry will leave Vancouver October 13th with his good friend and caddy, Rob Williams, and spend a week acclimatizing himself with warm temperatures and California greens before teeing off October 21 in the first stage of the most demanding audition in sport---four rounds at East Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, California, followed by four more rounds in November, followed by 108 rounds at La Quinta, CA---252 unforgiving holes leading to the richest tour in golf.
