Sweden Tops Women's World Amateur On Day One

Team Sweden jumped into a 10-stroke lead in the opening round of the World Amateur Women's Team championship in Adelaide, Australia after tying a championship mark for lowest score in the first round that is shared by Canada (2004) and Japan (2006).

Spain is in second place at one-over par 145, Japan is third at 146 while Austria, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and defending champion South Africa are all tied for fourth at three-over 147.

With a 6-under-par 67 from Carolina Hedwall and 3-under-par 70 from Anna Nordqvist while playing on the par-73 East Course, the Swede's 10-stroke lead through 18 holes is the largest in championship history, surpassing the five-stroke margin of the USA in 1972 and 1982. In addition, Pernilla Lindberg shot a 1-under-par 72, which was not counted.

Canada's National team--Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (73), Kira Meixner (74) and Stephanie Sherlock (75) played on the par-72 west course.

In individual competition, Hedwall and Nordqvist holddown the first two spots while LeBlanc is tied for 10th, Meixner is T22nd and Sherlock T31st.

The field consists of 48 teams and 144 players.
