Canada Seeking 2nd World Amateur Team Title

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, British Columbia, together with teammates Jordan Irwin of Calgary and David Markle of Shelburne, Ontario will carry Canada's colours October 16-19 as one of 72 nations competing for the coveted Eisenhower Trophy at the Men's World Amateur Team Championship in Adelaide, Australia.

Playing at Royal Adelaide Golf Club and the Grange Golf Club's West Course, Canada is hoping to go one step further than 2006 when the team finished in second place. In 25 years of competing in this international Men's team event Canada has one victory (1986) and 11 top-5 finishes.

MensWorldAmTeam101508.jpg"This is undoubtedly a team deep in skill, knowledge and determination," says non-playing captain Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver, the RCGA's Director of High Performance. "We anticipate an excellent showing from this squad and are hoping to build on the team's great success from 2006."

Also accompanying the team in Australia is Henry Brunton, head coach of the National Men's Amateur Team.

Last week in Adelaide Canada's women's squad, of Kira Meixner of Richmond, B.C., Maude-Aimée LeBlanc of Windsor, Que., and Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont., finished fourth in the Women's World Amateur Team Golf Championship with a combined team score of 583.

Conducted by the International Golf Federation, which is comprised of the national governing bodies of golf in more than 110 countries, the biennial World Amateur Golf Team Championships is contested over four rounds of stroke play with the top two scores from each team counting towards the team total.

The competition is rotated among three geographic zones of the world: Asia-Pacific, North American and European-African. In 1992 Canada hosted the competition at Vancouver's Marine Drive and West Vancouver's Capilano Golf Clubs. In 2010, the event will be held in Argentina and the 2012 event will be held in Turkey.
