Scotland, U.S.A Dominate World Team Amateur

A head-to-head battle between Scotland and the United States has developed atop the leaderboard at the 25th biennial Men's World Amateur Team Championship in Adelaide, Australia leaving Canada well back in 17th place and 17 shots behind the two leaders after 36 holes.

Led by the tandem of Callum Macaulay and Wallace Booth, the Scottish side recorded a second round score of 9-under on the par 73 Royal Adelaide Golf Club, making up the first day's two shot deficit and moving Scotland into a tie for the lead at 17-under par 273.

The American twosome of Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark, together 8-under after the opening round, combined for a team score of 7-under on the shorter par 72 Grange Golf Club.

As a result, the U.S. and Scotland have opened up an eight shot lead over third place New Zealand, nine strokes ahead of Team Sweden and 10 in front of fifth place Wales.

Each day each of the 65 nations competing select the two lowest scores posted by their three-man teams.

Canada's trio of 20-year-old Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, British Columbia, the University of Washington Huskies' No. 1 NCAA player, Jordan Irwin, 23, of Calgary, 2008 Pacific Coast Amateur Champion, and David Markle, 23 of Shelburne, Ontario have collaborated on a team total of 146-144 for even par 290.

With rounds of par 73 and 1-under 71, Taylor, the 2007 Canadian Amateur champion, has been Canada's leader. Irwin was also level par his first round and 1-over on Thursday. Markle has scored rounds of 78 and 74 for a 7-over par total.

The inaugural World Amateur Team Championships was played on The Old Course at St Andrews in 1958.
