The four round 12th World University Golf Championship got underway in Sun City, South Africa today with 18 nations and over 100 students competing, including 11 players representing Canada.
Played under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Canadian squad will be led by the two medalists from the 2008 Royal Canadian Golf Association university college championships held in May,
The women's five player roster includes Christina Spence of Cobble Hill, BC who captured the individual crown and led the University of Victoria women to the team title. Spence will be joined in South Africa by University of Victoria teammate Anne Balser of Digby, N.S.
The six-golfer men's team is comprised of six of the top seven RCGA finishers including individual champion Andrew Robb of Richmond, who led UBC to the men's title. Accompanying Robb are Thunderbird teammate Cory Renfrew of Victoria; Laval's Mathieu Gingrasof Moncton; Queen's Patrick Forbes of Toronto; Western Ontario's Charles Fitzsimmons of Toronto; and Victoria's Parker Lilly. Victoria's Bryan Carbery will accompany the team as a coach.
