It was just 15 months ago when an 18-year-old from Taiwan won a CN Canadian Women's Tour event at the Vancouver Golf Club and said her only goal was to someday make it to the LPGA TOUR. Yani Tseng had no problems reaching that goal and now the LPGA's rookie sensation has her eyes set on capturing the CN Canadian Women's Open.
That may not be a problem either. Tseng has a four stroke lead after three rounds.
Perched atop the leaderboard at (70-64-68=202) 14-under par, Tseng played Tseng was forced to return to the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club early Saturday morning to finish the final eight holes of Friday's second round after inclement weather suspended play, and after matching 36-hole leader Lorena Ochoa at 10-under, Tseng returned to the course at 2:10 p.m. to play in the final group with Ochoa (66-68-74=208, -8) and Katherine Hull (71-65-72=208, -8).
She completed Friday's round Saturday with a course-record 8-under-par 64 and then shot an impressive 4-under 68 performance Saturday afternoon.
So far this season Tseng has won the 2008 McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola winner and is the leader in the 2008 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year race.
Sunday's final round will mark the second time in the last four LPGA Tour events that Tseng will enter the finale with the lead. In July, the 19-year-old Taiwanese rookie took a 2-stroke lead into the final round of the LPGA State Farm Classic, only to finish runner-up to South Korean Ji Young Oh. The second-place finish was one of four for Tseng - previous runner-up finishes came at the MasterCard Classic Honoring Alejo Peralta Presented by Nextel, Ginn Open and Evian Masters.
NOTES:
Pak collects first ace on LPGA Tour - - Since becoming the LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls' of Fame youngest member in 2007, it's been well accepted that there hasn't been much that Se Ri Pak has not accomplished in her 12-year Tour career. However, that changed Saturday afternoon at the Open when Pak collected the first ace of her LPGA Tour career, as she holed out from 178 yards on the fifth hole of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club with a 6-iron. Pak's ace was the 15th of the 2008 LPGA Tour season, and the fourth longest on Tour this year. Hwanhee Lee (189 yards), Leta Lindley (188) and Teresa Lu (182) are the only players to have recorded longer holes-in-one through 23 Tour events. With the aid of the ace, Pak (68-70-68=206, -10) carded a 4-under-par 68 in the third round and is four strokes behind 54-hole leader Yani Tseng (70-64-68=202, -14) entering Sunday's final round.
Defending champion Ochoa 6 back. - - Defending champion Lorena Ochoa (66-68-74=208, -8) enters Sunday's finale at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club six strokes behind Tseng. Ochoa's third round was plagued by three bogeys - on holes four, five and 13 - and she finished with a birdie on the final hole for a 2-over 74. The Rolex Rankings' number one shares third place with Katherine Hull (71-65-72=208, -8), and the duo are trailed by Paula Creamer (71-70-70=211, -5) and Song-Hee Kim (69-71-71=211, -5) at 5-under 211 in a two-way tie for fifth place.
Wie climbs on Moving Day - - Sponsor exemption Michelle Wie (75-70-69=214, -2) put together a bogey-free 3-under-par 69 on Moving Day to climb from a tie for 31st place after 36 holes into a tie for 14th place. Playing on her sixth and final tournament exemption of the 2008 LPGA Tour season, Wie carded back-to-back birdies on holes four and five of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club and added the third subpar at the par-4, 364-yard 13th hole. In 2008, Wie has collected $26,288 in LPGA Official Earnings through five events.
Tseng's course record at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club - - Tseng's course record of 8-under 64 is a stroke better than the 65 set in 1994 by Martha Nause and equaled Friday by Australia's Katherine Hull.
CN MIRACLE MATCH SUPPORTS CHEO
The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) has been designated as the official charity of the 2008 CN Canadian Women's Open. In 2008 alone, almost $600,000 has already been raised towards the CHEO Foundation as part of the CN Miracle Match program. To date, the CN Canadian Women's Open has raised almost $1.6 million towards children's charities since CN began its title sponsorship of the event in 2006.
CN donates $100,000 to the Annika Foundation.
CN announced on Saturday that it has donated $100,000 to the Annika Foundation. The gift was presented to Annika Sorenstam at a special event held in conjunction with the CN Canadian Women's Open as a tribute to Sorenstam's accomplishments both on and off of the golf course. The LPGA Tour and World Halls of Fame member announced in May that she will step away from competitive golf at the conclusion of the 2008 LPGA Tour season.
As part of her continuing legacy, the Annika Foundation was created in 2007 to provide educational and financial resources that will help children of all backgrounds realize their full potential. The Foundation creates and partners with programs that teach the importance of living a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and physical fitness, and offer experiences and opportunities that enable aspiring junior golfers to pursue their dreams.
