Military shooters from 15 nations will invade the Canadian capital this week hoping to claim a world title with the fewest shots possible.

The 5th World Military Golf Championship, featuring over 100 military golfers from 15 nations, from Bahrain to Zambia, will join their Canadian compatriots at Ottawa's Hylands Golf Club, from August 18 to 23 for the championship. The Canadian Forces (CF) participates in international sports as a member of the Conseil international du sport militaire (CISM), an international military sports organization founded in 1948 that is open to all nations. CISM now boasts 131 member countries and holds more than 20 competitions annually. The fundamental aim of CISM is to promote sport activity and physical education between military forces as a means to foster world peace. These ideas are encapsulated in the CISM motto "Friendship through Sport". Canada currently participates in CISM basketball, fencing, running, sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball, wrestling, and of course, golf. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for August 18, 8:30 am at Hampton Inn, 100 Coventry Road, Ottawa.

Winning double championships has became somewhat common place for BC players this season. Jackie Little of Port Alberni started the trend by capturing both the BC Mid-Amateur, her third in a row, and the BC Senior, in her first year of eligibility. Then came Eugene Wong who surprised no one by winning the BC Junior title and adding the BC Amateur in a one-hole playoff. We are not forgetting, of course, that Wong also won the BC High School title and Callaway World Junior Championship at Torrey Pines in San Diego, CA. Another recent double champion is SooBin Kim, the 15-year-old from Port Coquitlam who claimed both the Royale Canadian Junior Girls' title and the Canadian Juvenile crown in the same tournament a week ago in Winnipeg. And the latest is 8-year-old Sumie Francois of Burnaby, the World Callaway 8 and under medalist who this past Thursday, with the Golf Channel following her around, took home the Little Masters Junior Girls Age 10 & Under championship.

A final salute to the 'Sarge'. Orville Moddy, the 1969 U.S. Open champion, who was instrumental in introducing what some call the 'belly putter' to golf, died Friday from multiple myeloma at his home in Texas. The long putter isn't Moody's only claim to fame, however. He was also the last player to win the U.S. Open after qualifying at both the local and sectional levels. Orville's victory was perhaps the third-biggest upset in major championship history following Jack Fleck's stunning victory over Ben Hogan in the 1955 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club, and the original 'Rip it 'n Grip It' dude, John Daly, who came out of the blue as a last minute fourth alternated to win at the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick. Orville Moody was 74.
