Jackie Little - 2008 Canadian Women's Senior champion

Although barely five feet tall, even in golf shoes, Little dominated the Canadian championship in much the same manner she did while winning her first British Columbia Senior championship this summer, with unerring accuracy off the tee and an unfaltering short game that offsets her lack of distance.

"I'm truly thrilled, winning today means a lot to me," said the elated champion, a highly regarded member at Vancouver Island's Port Alberni Golf Club. "Any time you win a national championship it's extra-special. Winning at this level means you have to keep your game together for three rounds, which isn't always easy."

Heading into Thursday's final round with an impressive 11-stroke lead, Little struggled against gusting northeasterly winds and finished the tournament at (76-71-80--227) 14-over par . . . five strokes better than her B.C. teammate, runner-up Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, at 19-over 232.

Third place honours went to Cheryll Damphouse of Amherstburg, Ont., who finished 24-over while Alyson Martin of Vancouver, finished alone in fourth place at 28-over 241, a score that also awarded her the 2008 Canadian Super Senior's crown.

Karen Pultz of Surrey and Holly Horwood of Vancouver tied for fifth at 29 while Phyllis Laschuk of Vancouver and Alison Murdoch of Victoria, who was going for her fifth Canadian Senior title, each tied for ninth place.

"It sure was tough out there today," added Little. "The wind was hurling and I had to settle for pars at best. We were battling the elements all week. Whether it was fog, cold breezes or strong wind, Mother Nature sure let us know who's boss."

Although she stands tall as a player, because of her height Little might well be described as the shortest Canadian champion since Marlene Stewart Streit dominated women's golf in the 50's through the 80's.

"She's a machine, that's all I got to say," remarked Port Alberni Golf Club. Head Pro Bruce MacDonald. "Nothing seems to phase that girl. She always seems to be the same person all the way through. She doesn't get down or up, she's always a happy person"

Having a national champion in the club will undoubtedly give the Alberni region a boost.

"The banners will be flying when she gets home," said MacDonald. "This is awesome for the club, for the whole valley."

A winner of five BC Amateur titles, two Alberta Amateurs and three consecutive BC Mid-Amateur championships, Little's first national title came last year when she captured the Canadian Mid-Amateur.

Her spectacular season of firsts in 2008 includes winning the BC Senior championship by 13 shots in her first year of eligibility, winning the BC Mid-Amateur for a third consecutive season and being a member of the winning provincial teams at both the Canadian Women's and Senior Women's championships.

Jackie also played her way to second place finishes in both the Canadian Women's Mid-Amateur and Mid-Master tournaments and will now attempt to add her name to the U.S. Women's Senior trophy September 19, when she tees-it-up at the 46th playing of the USGA Senior Women's Amateur in Tulsa, Okla.

The Royale Canadian Women's Senior Championship is open to women who have reached their 50th birthday by the first scheduled day of the championship, August 26, 2008. Corresponding with the championship is the Super Senior competition, open to female amateurs who have reached their 60th birthday by the first scheduled day of the championship, August 26, 2008.
