Gudmund Lindbjerg - Finally A BC Senior Champion

For the 59-year-old Lundbjerg, a member of Pit Meadows GC, this was a sweet breakthrough. In 2004 and 2005 Lundbjerg had finished this tournament as a runner. In fact, in 2005 he had a two shot lead before loosing by two over the back nine.

This time, however, Lundbjerg maintained the one shot lead he acquired after his opening round of 69 and still had after 36 holes. Although he lost four shots on today's four closing holes he was, in reality, playing it safe considering the degree of difficulty over Summerland's narrow finishing stretch.

"He played it smartly and was protecting his lead," said BC Golf Association Executive Director Kris Jonasson. "it was nice to see Gumund finally break through after being so close in this tournament for a number of years."

Burnaby, BC's Brian Alexander of the Vancouver Club, who was able to record six birdies on day one and four more the second round, was unable mount any kind of final charge or record a single birdie.

Both players were tied after the front nine but a pair of double bogeys by Alexander on the 12th and 17th holes spoiled any chances he might have had.

Finishing with a share of five-over 221 were Ken Thompson of Nanaimo, for third place by retrogression and 2005 BC Senior Men's champion, Noel Pumfrey of Victoria in fourth.

In the Super Senior's division, 2006 PNGA Senior's champion Bill Wilms of Delta and the Beach Grove Club, carded a final 16-over 232 to claim the Super Senior's title by retrogression over yesterday's leader, Ron Stone of Penticton. Another former school teacher Gary Puder of Burnaby, BC Senior champion in 1996, finished in third by retrogression at 17-over 233 over fourth place finisher Rick Weihe of Bellingham, WA.

The Senior Men's team that will represent BC in the 2008 Canadian Senior Men's Amateur Championship at the Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club in Ontario September 9-12, will be Lindbjerg, Alexander, Thompson and Pumfrey.
