Canadian Tour rookie Alex Coe shot a bogey-free round of 65 to move to 13-under par 197 and two shots in front of Graham DeLaet of Weyburen, SA after three rounds of the Jane Rogers Championship of Mississauga.
Coe, from LaQuints, CA, said Friday that he's been focusing on good starts. Saturday, he did just that.
"I finally put the ball in the fairway on the first hole and made an eight-footer for birdie."
With five birdies on his round, Coe may have saved his best for last. Like most of the field, he found trouble off the tee at 18 when his ball landed in the rough. His second shot came up 85 yards short and holding a lob wedge in his hand, the tournament leader knocked it to five feet and rapped home the par putt.
"The thing I've been doing the best this week is having control and staying in the moment," said Coe. "I've just been playing my game and having great course management."
"It's all about determination and not allowing myself to get out of the moment and hitting the ball as best as I can."
DeLaet rebounded from Friday's disastrous final hole with a 64, which was the low round of the day.
"Except for those two holes (14 and 18) yesterday, I have played solid golf since Montreal," said DeLaet.
"You see it all the time in golf where someone wins and then they win again and again. I always thought it was amazing that they would do that but it is incredible what a win does for your confidence.
In position for his second consecutive title (Desjardins Montreal Open), the Weyburn, Sask., native knows several players are lurking close by.
Tim Wood has third place to himself at 9 under par after a 68 while Liam Kendregan's 67 gives him fourth spot at 7 under par 203.
Jim Seki (69), DJ Fiese (70), John Ellis (66) and Canadians Richard Scott (65) and Michael Gligic (69) are T-5 at 6 under par 204.
Second round leader George Bradford shot 75 to slip to T-13, nine shots off the pace.
