Brimming with an abundance of confidence after winning the Alberta Amateur last month, Calgary's Scott Stiles shot a round of 5-under par 65 to move into a share of first place after day three of the 2008 Canadian Men's Amateur Championship held at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alta.
Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont., carded a 4-under 67 and is also tied for first place after 54 holes at 8-under 205

"I'm playing as good as I ever have," said Stiles, who won this year's Alberta Men's Amateur title on July 25. "Confidence plays a big part in golf and my win at the Alberta amateur helped give mine a kick-start. Since then, every time I'm within 35 feet of the cup I feel like it could go in."
Stiles, who is making his third appearance at the Canadian amateur, had his best showing in 2007 when he lost to Mitchell Fox of Okotoks, Alta. in the first round of match play.
While Stiles was energized, Burke was more nonchalant about his game.
"I just tried to keep it out of the rough today," said Burke, who had five birdies, three bogeys and an eagle en route to his colourful third-round 67. "The rough is up a little from when the tournament started, so it puts a lot more emphasis on how you play off-the-tee."
The rough at Paradise Canyon has grown an inch and a half since play started Monday due to late night watering from the course maintenance staff. The penalizing rough now stands at a demanding four and a half inches.
Alexandre Kaleka of Orelans, France moved into sole possession of third place with his day's work. Kaleka shot a 5-under 66 today to sit a single-shot back of the co-leaders at 7-under for the championship. The 21-year old native of France played particularly well on today's back-nine, firing a sizzling 5-under par 30.
"The pins were a little easier on the back-nine today," said Kaleka. "I'm pretty happy with where I'm sitting. Tomorrow I just want to go out, focus on course management and play like I did today."
Kaleka's performance this week is even more impressive considering he is still recovering from a broken knee, which left him sidelined from golf for nearly 12 weeks.
Tuesday's co-leader, Graham Baillargeon of Mississauga, Ont., shot a 1-under 70 to sit at 5-under par and slip into a tie for fourth with a quartet of British Columbians---defending champion Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, Brady Johnson of Mill Bay, BC Amateur and Junior champion Eugene Wong of North Vancouver and Lindsay Renolds of Christina Lake, B.C.
"To win you have to make birdies," said Baillargeon, who is only 1-under par for his last two rounds. "The putts just haven't been dropping for me. I lipped out putts on 10, 11 and 18 which would have helped, but I still think I'm in pretty good position. I just need to hit some more fairways and give myself an opportunity for more birdies."
Thursday's final-round shootout for the Earl Grey Cup and the coveted exemption into the 2009 RBC Canadian Open promises to be truly exciting as eight players sit within four-strokes of the lead.
Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C. carded the days lowest round, a 6-under par 61. Many may remember Wallace when he made history in 2004 by becoming the youngest player ever to win the Canadian amateur. Wallace was just 15-years old. With the win, he earned himself a spot to play among the PGA TOUR's finest at the 2004 Canadian Open.
A match play event from the beginning, the Amateur changed to stroke play for the 1969 championship and remained that way through 1994 when it reverted to match play in honour of the RCGA's and the championship's centennial in 1995. 2008 marks the first time it has been purely a stroke play event since then.
A complete list of players, starting times and post-round results for the 104th playing of the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship can be found online at www.rcga.org.
