Age And Wind No Handicap for Canadian Amateur Leaders

Last year's Canadian Junior Boys champion and member of the National Development team, 19-year old Graham Baillargeron of Mississauga, Ont., carded seven birdies and three bogeys en route to his 67, while 50-year old Garth Collings of Matlock, Man., the 2003 Canadian Mid-Amateur champion fired four birdies as part of his bogey-free round.

Both Baillargeron and Collings had afternoon tee-times, which may have been crucial to their success.

"It was a grind out there, you really had to keep it below the wind," said Baillargeron, who is heading into his second year at Michigan State University. "The wind definitely died down when we hit the back-nine which helped."

Playing with less prevailing winds proved to be the day's turning point.

While most players struggled with holes 10, 11 and 12, due to burly Albertan winds deflecting off the walls of the coulees, both co-leaders managed to get through unscathed at even-par for the holes.

The winds are most evident on the elevated par-3 12th hole, which plays a mere 131 yards. While players in the morning were using 6-irons due to the calmer winds, the two leaders were able to pin-hunt with 9-irons.

While Baillargeron seemed attentive of the winds, the more experienced Collings craved the challenge.

"Bring it (the winds) on," said Collings, who is making his 16th appearance at the Canadian amateur. "The winds didn't bother me too much today. I was able to get on the right side of the hole, which help me score well."

In Inter-provincial Willingdon Cup play, Team Manitoba took a 1-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round by combining for a team-total 2-over par. Manitoba looks to capture their first Willingdon Cup since they earning back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996.

Lurking in second is team British Columbia, who sit a single-stroke back of the lead at 3-over par. The host Alberta squad sits third at 7-over par.

Following Tuesday's round, the provincial team champions will be crowned and the field cut to the low 70 competitors and ties.
