Sue Kim hasn't acquired a nickname as yet but the diminutive dynamo from Langley has certainly earned the moniker 'BIRDIE KIM' for the manner in which she recaptured the British Columbia Junior Girls' Championship at Sunnydale Golf & Country Club in Courtenay.
Kim recorded 22 birdies and one eagle over 54 holes while compiling a 12-under par score of (68-70-69) 207---seven shots in front of runner-up Soo-Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam.
"I was up and down," said Sue Kim, referring to her final round of 4-under 69. "I made a lot of birdies but I made a lot of bogeys too -- mainly I stayed focused so that was good."
In recapturing the BC Junior title she first won in 2005 as a 14-year-old, Kim began by shattering the course record by three shots while collecting seven birdies and a bogey. Her second round consisted of an eagle, six birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey and she finished off her assault of the Sunnydale course by carding nine birdies, five bogeys and four lonely pars.
On three occasions Kim posted streaks of three consecutive birdies and on Thursday she managed four-in-a-row. In fact, the front nine of her final round consisted of just one par, six birdies and two bogeys. On Sunnydale's par-5's alone she was 11-under for the tournament.
This was Kim's third victory of the season. She made national headlines at the Richmond Golf Club in May by becoming the first amateur and the youngest player ever to win a CN Canadian Women's Tour Championship in a spectacular come-from-behind three-hole playoff. To prove that was no fluke Kim won the second event on the Canadian Women's pro circuit. Kim's first triumph earned her an exemption into the CN Canadian Women's Open next month in Ottawa.
Soo--Bin Kim fired a final round of 4-under 69 to earn second place honours while last year's Canadian Junior Girls' runner-up Christine Wong of Richmond and 2007 B.C. Juvenile Girls' champion Amanda Baker of Nanaimo tied for third at 4-over 223.
It was a disappointing event for two-time defending champion Jessica Wallace of Langley who missed a spot on the provincial team by two strokes. She ballooned to a final round of 80 and finished in fifth place at 6-over 225.
Sue Birdie Kim, Soo--Bin Kim, Baker and Wong will now comprise the B.C. Team for the Royale Canadian Junior Girls' Championship at St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba August 4-8, 2008.
