Kirby Dreher Leads Another Amateur Assault On The CN Women's Tour

The Canadian National Railway puts up $82,500 to sponsor four tournaments that comprise the CN Canadian Women's Tour but so far this season Canada's elite young amateurs have stolen the show, winning the first three events . . . and they are at it again in this week's final tournament in Cumberland, Ontario.

This time it's Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John, BC, a standout student and an integral member of Ohio's Kent State University women's golf team. Dreher coasted around the Camelot Golf and Country Club Course near Ottawa in 5-under par 67 and will begin Tuesday's final round with a four-shot lead.

"I guess it was just a good day for me," said the humble Dreher. "I putted well for the most part, but I stuck a lot of shots close so I didn't have too many long putts."

Her round might have been lower had she not three-putted the 18th hole for her second bogey of the day, however her card does contain seven birdies, four on the front and three on the back over Camelot's 6,075-yard par 72 course.

"Tomorrow (Tuesday) my plan is fairways and greens," added Dreher, who last week finished second to her KSU teammate Kira Meixner in the British Columbia Women's Amateur. "There are a lot of good players here, so I know I'll have to come to play tomorrow."

Helping to showcase the strength of Canada's National Women's Amateur Team, two team members---Langley, BC's Sue Kim, who won the first two Tour events this season, and Sara-Maude Juneau of Fossambault, Quebec---share second place with yet another amateur, 21-year-old Lauren Mielbrecht of Gulf Stream, Florida, who attends the University of Virginia.

Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C. and Megan Godfrey of Homewood, Ill. round out the top-five spots after shooting matching par 72's.

"I'm happy, but it sure was a grind out there," said Richdale. "I made some long ones and missed some short ones. I'd like to go lower tomorrow because my goal is to try and qualify for the Open."

Behind Dreher there are 18 players within 7-strokes of the lead.

The winner receives an exemption into the CN Canadian Women's Open and four more exemptions will be awarded at the end of the tournament thanks to spots made available through the CN Canadian Women's Tour order of merit. The player with the most points following play at Camelot will earn the Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year award as well as the $3,000 (CDN) Order of Merit champion's purse.
